Human sensitivity to smell is significantly intensified during fear, shock and stressful situations. American scientists made such conclusion during a series of experiments.
Volunteers were offered to distinguish 2 substances belonging to optical isomers line by smell, it was earlier supposed that only animals could feel the difference between them. One of them has herbal smell, other – oily.
After volunteers were subjected to current rush (from 0,5 to 5 milliampere, causes just light discomfort), 50% of participants could distinguish one substance from another accurately.
One of the chief scientists explained, that “people can distinguish smells, when they have serious base for it, for example, avoiding electroshock”.
