Bedwetting or urinary incontinence is a frequent disorder. About 500 000 children under 16 years has regular bedwetting.

What is the reason?

1.    In most cases the problems appears due to regulating system slow development, allowing urinary bladder standing without evacuation for several hours. This is a genetic peculiarity of development that a child has to outstrip with time.

2.    However, bedwetting can also appear on the background of different diseases, such as urinary infection, diabetes, kidney diseases. In such cases involuntary urination happens not only at night, but also during a day.

3.    Sometimes children bedwet periodically. i.e. there are periods, when they are ok. In such case enuresis is caused by stress, resulted by problems in kindergarten, school, birth of a new baby, family problems etc.

Anyway, in case of enuresis you need to observe a child to diagnose diseases, listed in point 2.

What to do? The first thing you should understand is that there is no anyone’s blame in the situation. A child experiences all happening more acutely, than parents, so you should not shout or rail at him.

You can try the following:

Limit liquid consumption before going to bed, restrict it to several gulps, if a child wants to drink very much. See that most part of liquid comes in a child’s organism in morning and afternoon hours.

Avoid caffeinated drinks.

Teach a child peeing before going to bed.

Invent an encouragement system, in case a night was “dry”. Thus, a child will receive a psychological stimulus to overcome this peculiarity.
Use good protection for a bed or sofa, so that a child’s enuresis would not make you worrying for furniture.

Allow him taking part in the process of underwear change, and then a child will feel involved in the process, try to help you, instead of sitting aside and feeling guilty.

Official medicine offers its methods to solve enuresis problem. Among world novelties in this area we can distinguish Desmopressin and signal sensor. Signal sensor is put between a bed-sheet and mattress and works while a child’s attempt to bedwet. Sensor application showed effectiveness in 23 children upwards 7.

Desmopressin is a medicine, issued in the form of pills or nasal spray. It reduces quantity of urine producing during night time. Effectiveness is 70%. It has side effects: headache, gastric pain, sickness.
